UN renews Volker Turk as human rights chief despite US opposition
The UN General Assembly voted on Friday to extend Volker Turk's term as high commissioner for human rights by four years, overriding opposition from the United States, Russia and Israel. The renewal passed 144 to 10, with 13 abstentions, and takes effect on October 12. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had proposed keeping Turk in the post for a second term.
