India signs on to WTO pact curbing harmful fishing subsidies

India deposited its instrument of acceptance on Monday to become a party to the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, the Commerce Ministry said. The pact bars state support for illegal fishing and overfished stocks, covering marine wild-capture fishing but not aquaculture or inland fisheries. Adopted by consensus in Geneva in June 2022, it took effect on 15 September 2025.
